WhatsApp fonts and fancy text
Why fancy text works on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has built-in formatting for messages: _italic_, *bold*, ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace```. It only works inside chats. Unicode letters work everywhere in the app, including your profile name, About, group names and status, and they offer styles WhatsApp doesn’t have, like cursive and bubble letters.
How to paste fancy text into WhatsApp
iPhone
- Tap a style above. A “Copied” note appears.
- In WhatsApp, open a chat or go to Settings, tap your name or About, and tap the text field.
- Touch and hold the text field, tap Paste, then save.
Android
- Tap a style above to copy it.
- In WhatsApp, open a chat or go to Settings, tap your name or About, and tap the text field.
- Long-press the text field, choose Paste, then save.
Opened this page inside WhatsApp? Some in-app browsers block copying. If nothing is copied, a box opens with the text selected: long-press it and choose Copy, or open the page in Safari or Chrome.
Tips for WhatsApp
- For a quick bold or italic in a chat, WhatsApp’s own *stars* and _underscores_ are enough. Use this page for cursive, bubbles or frames.
- A fancy profile name stands out in groups. Contacts who saved your number see their own name for you instead, so the effect shows mainly to people who haven’t.
- Group names and status updates accept every style. Send a risky style to yourself first to see how it looks.
Questions people ask
How do I change the font on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp can’t switch fonts, but you can paste letters that look different. Copy a style above and paste it into a message, your name or About.
What is the difference between WhatsApp’s *bold* and bold letters here?
*Stars* make WhatsApp draw a message in bold, but only in chats. Bold Unicode letters are bold everywhere, also in your name and when someone copies the text out of WhatsApp.
Why do some people see boxes instead of my WhatsApp text?
Their phone has no font for one of the characters. Bold, italic, cursive and gothic show on almost all current phones; rare styles like mirrored or subscript letters are the usual culprits.
Can people still find me on WhatsApp if I use fancy text?
Search looks for plain letters. If your name is only fancy text, people typing your name may not find you. Keep the username plain and use fancy text in the display name or bio.
