Alt codes for symbols
All 123 Alt+0 codes and all 255 classic Alt codes in two tables. Tap a symbol to copy it, or learn the code you use every day.
How to use Alt codes
- Turn on Num Lock.
- Hold the left Alt key and type the code on the numeric keypad (not the number row).
- Let go of Alt: the symbol appears.
Codes with a leading 0, like Alt+0176, come from the Windows code page 1252; these work on Windows set to English and Western European languages. Codes without it, like Alt+248, come from code page 437 of the original IBM PC; Windows in other languages may use a different old code page, so a few of them can give other symbols there.

Laptop without a numeric keypad
Alt codes only work with the digits of a numeric keypad. Without one, try this:
- The symbols panel: Win+., then the Ω tab. No codes needed.
- In Word or Outlook: type the hex code of the character and press Alt+X.
- A hidden keypad: some laptops put one on the U I O J K L M keys; turn it on with Fn + Num Lock.
- The On-Screen Keyboard (search for "osk"): Options › Turn on numeric key pad, then hold Alt and click the digits.
- Or simply tap the symbol in the tables above to copy it.
Alt + 1 to Alt + 255 (code page 437)
255 codes from the original IBM PC character set: smileys ☺ ☻, card suits ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠, arrows, box drawing and Greek letters.
Where Alt codes come from
Alt codes date back to MS-DOS: the number was the position of the character in the computer's character set. Windows kept the trick and added a second set with a leading zero for its own code page.
Both sets hold only 255 characters, so newer symbols such as ✓ or ★ have no Alt code. For those use the symbols panel, Alt+X in Word, or copy them from this site.
Questions people ask
What is the Alt code for the degree symbol?
Alt+0176, or the shorter Alt+248. Type the digits on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on.
Why does my Alt code not work?
Usually Num Lock is off or you used the number row above the letters. Alt codes need the numeric keypad.
How do I use Alt codes on a laptop?
Turn on the hidden keypad with Fn + Num Lock if your laptop has one, or use the On-Screen Keyboard with its numeric pad. Easier: press Win+. for the symbols panel.
Why do Alt+0 codes and Alt codes without 0 give different symbols?
They come from two different character tables: code page 1252 (with 0) and the old DOS code page 437 (without 0).
How do I type symbols that have no Alt code?
In Word type the hex code and press Alt+X, use the Win+. panel, or copy the symbol from this site.
