Skin tones
332 emoji, mostly people and hands, come in five skin tones from ๐๐ป to ๐๐ฟ. Pick your default tone above and every one of them on this site follows it, here and on the group pages.
Need another tone just once? Long-press (or right-click) the emoji and choose. Each tone is a separate emoji: a base emoji plus an invisible skin tone modifier.
How to type emoji on any device
On Windows 10 and 11, press Win+. to open the emoji panel and type a word to search. On a Mac, press Ctrl+โ+Space. On a phone, switch to the emoji keyboard and use its search field.
Searching works with the same names and keywords you see on our emoji pages: they come from Unicode's CLDR data, which phone keyboards use too.
Emoji are text, too
An emoji is a Unicode character, like a letter. When you copy โค๏ธ you copy one or a few code points, and the phone of the person you send it to draws it with its own emoji font. That is why the same emoji looks a little different on iPhone, Android and Windows.
New emoji arrive every year. A phone that has not been updated since then shows a box or a question mark instead. Each emoji page tells you when it was added, so you know whether your friends can see it.
Some emoji are built from several others joined by an invisible zero width joiner: ๐งโ๐ป is ๐ง + ๐ป. Flags are pairs of regional letters: ๐ฏ๐ต is J + P.
Questions people ask
How do I copy and paste an emoji?
Tap or click it. It is copied at once and a small message confirms it. Paste it with a long press and Paste on a phone, or Ctrl+V (โV on a Mac) on a computer.
Why do some emoji show as boxes or question marks?
The emoji is newer than the device's emoji font. Each emoji page shows the Emoji version and year; phones updated after that year show it.
How do I change the skin tone?
Choose a default skin tone at the top of this page. To pick a different tone for one emoji, long-press it (or right-click on a computer) and tap the tone you want.
What do the emoji names mean?
They are the official short names from Unicode's CLDR, translated into each language. The same names and keywords power the emoji search on most phones.
Can I copy several emoji at once?
Yes. Turn on Collect above a grid, tap the emoji you want and they line up in a bar at the bottom. Copy them all with one tap.
