How to type symbols on your device

The quickest way is right here: tap a symbol and paste it where you need it. If you need the same one every day, learn its shortcut. On Windows many symbols have an Alt code (hold Alt and type a number on the numeric keypad), Windows 10 and 11 also have a symbols panel behind Win + full stop, and on a Mac the Option key turns the number and letter keys into © ™ € ° and many more.

Phones work differently: some symbols hide behind a long press on the keyboard, and for the rest a text shortcut (Text Replacement on iPhone, the personal dictionary in Gboard) turns a short word into your symbol.

What these symbols are

Every symbol on this site is a Unicode character: real text, not a picture. That is why it pastes into Instagram bios, TikTok names, WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs or a game nickname, and why you can make it bigger, bold or another colour like any letter.

The shape you see comes from the fonts on your device. An old phone may show a box (□) for a symbol added to Unicode recently; each symbol page tells you which Unicode version added it and checks live whether your device can show it.

We group the 3,041 symbols into 36 sets, from hearts and stars to maths, currency and box drawing. 296 of the most searched symbols have their own page with every way to type them, the HTML code and their name in 12 languages.

Questions people ask

How do I copy and paste a symbol?

Tap or click it. It is copied at once and a small message confirms it. Then paste it with a long press and Paste on a phone, or Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) on a computer.

Can I copy several symbols at once?

Yes. Turn on Collect above any set, tap the symbols you want and they line up in a bar at the bottom. Copy all of them with one tap, like ♡ ⋆ ˚ ☁ for a bio.

Why do some symbols show as boxes?

Your device has no font that contains that character, usually because it was added to Unicode after your system was last updated. Your friends with newer phones still see it. Each symbol page shows the Unicode version and checks your device.

Do these symbols work on Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp?

Yes, they are normal text characters. Apps that allow only letters in some fields (some game names, usernames) may reject them, but bios, captions, comments and messages accept them.

How do I find a symbol when I don't know its name?

Type a word in the search box (heart, arrow, tick, euro), its code point (U+2665 or 2665) or paste the symbol itself. If you have a symbol and want to know what it is, the page for it shows its name and meaning.
