What ° means and how it is used

The degree sign (U+00B0) marks temperatures, angles and map coordinates: 21 °C, a 90° turn, 48°51′ N. Style guides such as the SI brochure put a space before °C but none before an angle. It is easy to confuse with the masculine ordinal º used in Spanish and Portuguese (1º, 2º), which is underlined in many fonts, and with the small ring ˚ from aesthetic bios.

In Unicode, ° is code point U+00B0 with the official name DEGREE SIGN. It belongs to the Latin-1 Supplement block and arrived with Unicode 1.1 in 1993.

Other words for it: hour, proof.

You will find it in our units, 112 symbols in all, together with ℃ µ Ω % ㎡.
