What ℃ means and how it is used

℃ (U+2103) packs the degree sign and the letter C into one character. It comes from East Asian encodings, so it is common in Japanese, Chinese and Korean text. Unicode and most style guides prefer two characters, °C, because they search, sort and read better with screen readers. Use ℃ when a layout needs one fixed-width cell, for example in a table of Japanese weather data.

In Unicode, ℃ is code point U+2103 with the official name DEGREE CELSIUS. It belongs to the Letterlike Symbols block and arrived with Unicode 1.1 in 1993.

You will find it in our unit symbols, 112 symbols in all, together with ° µ Ω % ㎡.
