What × means and how it is used

The multiplication sign × (U+00D7) is not the letter x, although it looks similar. It belongs in dimensions and scales (1920 × 1080, 3 × 4) and in 'x2'-style labels done properly. Spreadsheets and code use the asterisk * instead. Windows: Alt+0215; HTML: ×. Fonts centre it on the maths axis, unlike the letter.

In Unicode, × is code point U+00D7 with the official name MULTIPLICATION SIGN. It belongs to the Latin-1 Supplement block and arrived with Unicode 1.1 in 1993.

Other words for it: multiplication, multiply, sign, times.

You will find it in our math symbols, 148 symbols in all, together with π ∞ √ ± ÷.

Questions people ask

How do I type × on a laptop without a numeric keypad?

On Windows press Win + full stop (.) and pick × in the Symbols tab, or in Word type 00D7 and press Alt+X.

What is the difference between × and x?

× is the multiplication sign (U+00D7). x is a different character: latin small letter x (U+0078, Basic Latin block). They can look alike, but computers treat them as different letters, so a search for one will not find the other.

How do I type × on an iPhone?

The iPhone keyboard has no key for ×. Copy it here, then add it in Settings › General › Keyboard › Text Replacement with a shortcut like ;multip.

What is the HTML code for the multiplication sign?

Use the entity × or the numeric code × (hex ×). In CSS write \00D7, in JavaScript \u00D7.

Will × show on every phone?

Very likely yes: × dates from Unicode 1.1 (1993), so every current system has a font for it.
