What ≠ means and how it is used

The not-equal sign ≠ means two values differ: 3 ≠ 4. Programming languages usually write it as != or <> because ≠ is not on keyboards. On a Mac it is Option+=, which is often the fastest way; Windows users copy it or use Word's 2260 Alt+X.

The official Unicode name of ≠ is NOT EQUAL TO, code point U+2260. You will find it in the Mathematical Operators block; it was added in Unicode 1.1 (1993).

It also goes by these names and keywords: equal, inequality, inequation, not.

It sits in the math symbols with 148 symbols, among them π ∞ √ ± ×.
