What ¥ means and how it is used
¥ (U+00A5) marks the Japanese yen and also the Chinese yuan (renminbi), so prices sometimes add JP¥ or CN¥. In Japanese text the kanji 円 after the number is just as common: 1,000円. On Japanese Windows systems the backslash key and file paths historically display as ¥, because the Japanese code page put the yen sign where ASCII has the backslash.
Yen symbol (¥) is the Unicode character U+00A5, officially called YEN SIGN. It is in the Latin-1 Supplement block and has been part of Unicode since version 1.1 (1993).
People also call it or search for it as: CNY, currency, JPY, yuan.
On this site it is part of the currency symbols (61 symbols), next to € $ £ ¢ ₽.
