What Italic text is
Italic letters come from the same maths block as bold, in a serif and a sans-serif version. One letter is special: Unicode never gave the serif italic h its own slot in that run, because the Planck constant โ already looked exactly like it, so the generator uses that character. There are no italic digits, so numbers stay upright. Bold italic is the strongest of the three and reads well at small sizes.
Every Italic character comes from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which Unicode added in version 3.1. The main run has 1 gaps, filled with characters that were encoded elsewhere: โ (U+210E). 0โ9 have no Italic twin, so the generator leaves them plain. It is one of the safest styles: current iPhones, Android phones and Windows PCs draw it with their built-in fonts. Accents stay on: typing โCafรฉ Zoรซโ gives ๐ถ๐๐๐ฬ ๐๐๐ฬ.

Where to use Italic text
Italics suit quotes, song lines, book and film titles and soft emphasis in a caption. For a word you really want noticed, bold italic works better than plain italic.

Questions people ask
How do I write in italics on WhatsApp?
Inside a WhatsApp chat you can put the text between underscores, like _hello_. That trick only works in messages. The italic letters here also work in your name, About and status.
Why are my numbers not italic?
Unicode has bold, sans, outline and monospace digits but no italic ones. The generator keeps your numbers as normal digits instead of dropping them.
Will Italic text show on every phone?
Yes, on practically all current devices. Only very old systems may show a box.
Does Italic text work with accents?
Yes. Accented letters keep their marks, for example ๐ถ๐๐๐ฬ ๐๐๐ฬ.
Can I use Italic text on Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp?
