What Gothic text is
Unicode calls this style Fraktur, after the blackletter type used in German print for centuries; in English it is called Old English or gothic lettering. The alphabet was encoded for maths, where fraktur letters name algebraic objects. Five capitals (โญ โ โ โ โจ) were encoded earlier as letterlike symbols, so they are borrowed from there. Bold fraktur has no gaps at all, which is why its capitals look more even.
The Gothic letters live in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block of Unicode, part of the standard since version 3.1. 5 characters come from outside that run: โญ (U+212D), โ (U+210C), โ (U+2111), โ (U+211C), โจ (U+2128). The generator picks them by their Unicode names, so no letter is left out. There is no Gothic version of 0โ9; those characters stay as you typed them. The default fonts on iPhone, Android and Windows include these characters, so almost everyone sees them as intended. Accented letters keep their marks: โCafรฉ Zoรซโ becomes โญ๐๐ฃ๐ขฬ โจ๐ฌ๐ขฬ.

Where to use Gothic text
Gothic letters look strong in short words: a username, a band name, a title, one line in a bio. Small sizes make blackletter hard to read, so prefer bold gothic on phones.

Questions people ask
Is gothic the same as Old English?
For text styles, yes. Old English, gothic and blackletter all describe the same angular, broken letters. Unicodeโs name for them is Fraktur.
Does gothic text have numbers?
Fraktur in Unicode has no digits, so numbers stay normal. If you want styled numbers next to gothic letters, use bold or outline digits.
Will Gothic text show on every phone?
Yes, on practically all current devices. Only very old systems may show a box.
Does Gothic text work with accents?
Yes. Accented letters keep their marks, for example โญ๐๐ฃ๐ขฬ โจ๐ฌ๐ขฬ.
Can I use Gothic text on Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp?
