What Bold text is
Most apps strip formatting, so bold from a word processor disappears when you paste it. These letters are different: bold serif and bold sans letters are separate Unicode characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, so the weight is part of the text itself. Bold serif looks like a classic book heading, bold sans like a modern app label. Both have digits, so years and prices stay bold too.
Unicode 3.1 brought these characters, and the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block is where the Bold alphabet comes from. There are no gaps in the Bold alphabet, so every letter comes from the same run. Built-in fonts on all major systems cover it, so it rarely turns into boxes. Marks like รฉ and รง survive, so โCafรฉ Zoรซโ turns into ๐๐๐๐ฬ ๐๐จ๐ฬ.

How do I make text bold on Instagram?
Instagram has no bold option, but it shows these characters. Type above, tap the bold row and paste into your name, bio or caption.
Is bold text the same as a bold font?
No. A bold font draws normal letters thicker. Here each letter is replaced by a separate bold character. That is why it keeps its look in apps without formatting, and why screen readers may spell it out.
Will Bold text show on every phone?
Almost certainly. These characters are in the default fonts of current iPhones, Android phones and Windows PCs.
Does Bold text work with accents?
