What Strikethrough text is
Strikethrough text uses a combining character, U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, placed after every character. The phone draws the stroke over the character before it, so the line works with any script, including Cyrillic, Greek and accented letters. Slashed text uses U+0338 instead, and the underline variants U+0332 and U+0333 sit below the letters.
The Strikethrough letters live in the Combining Diacritical Marks block of Unicode, part of the standard since version 1.1. The default fonts on iPhone, Android and Windows include these characters, so almost everyone sees them as intended. Accented letters keep their marks: “Café Zoë” becomes C̶a̶f̶é̶ ̶Z̶o̶ë̶.

Where to use Strikethrough text
Crossed-out words are a classic joke: write the honest word, cross it out, then the polite one. They also show a changed price or plan. Spaces get the line too, so the stroke runs across the whole phrase.

Questions people ask
How do I cross out text on Instagram or TikTok?
Neither app has a strikethrough button. Type your text above, copy the strikethrough row and paste it; the line is part of the characters.
Why does the line look broken on some phones?
Each character gets its own short stroke, and fonts draw them at slightly different widths, so small gaps can appear. It is still readable everywhere.
Will Strikethrough text show on every phone?
Almost certainly. These characters are in the default fonts of current iPhones, Android phones and Windows PCs.
Does Strikethrough text work with accents?
Yes. Accented letters keep their marks, for example C̶a̶f̶é̶ ̶Z̶o̶ë̶.
Can I use Strikethrough text on Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp?
