What ∫ means and how it is used

The integral sign ∫ was introduced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1675 as an elongated S for summa, a sum. It marks integration, from areas under curves to physics formulas. Double ∬ and contour ∮ integrals have their own characters. On a Mac press Option+B.

The official Unicode name of ∫ is INTEGRAL, code point U+222B. You will find it in the Mathematical Operators block; it was added in Unicode 1.1 (1993).

It also goes by these names and keywords: calculus.

It sits in the math symbols with 148 symbols, among them π ∞ √ ± ×.
