What μ means and how it is used

Mu μ is the Greek letter used for the micro prefix (µm, µs), the coefficient of friction and the population mean in statistics. Unicode also has a separate micro sign µ from older encodings; they look alike and normalization treats them as the same, so search for either.

The official Unicode name of μ is GREEK SMALL LETTER MU, code point U+03BC. You will find it in the Greek and Coptic block; it was added in Unicode 1.1 (1993).

It sits in the greek with 69 symbols, among them α β γ Δ θ.
