What Δ means and how it is used

Capital delta Δ (U+0394) means 'change in': Δt is a change in time, ΔT a temperature difference. It also names river deltas because of its triangular shape. Unicode has a separate increment sign ∆ (U+2206) that looks the same; a US Mac types that one with Option+J. Lowercase δ is used for small changes and in calculus.

In Unicode, Δ is code point U+0394 with the official name GREEK CAPITAL LETTER DELTA. It belongs to the Greek and Coptic block and arrived with Unicode 1.1 in 1993.

You will find it in our greek, 69 symbols in all, together with α β γ θ λ.

On Windows press Win + full stop (.) and pick Δ in the Symbols tab, or in Word type 0394 and press Alt+X.
