What & means and how it is used

The ampersand & began as a ligature of the Latin word et (and), and you can still see the e and t in some typefaces. It belongs in names and fixed pairs such as AT&T or Q&A rather than running text. In HTML and URLs it has a special meaning, so web code writes it as &.

And symbol (ampersand) (&) is the Unicode character U+0026, officially called AMPERSAND. It is in the Basic Latin block and has been part of Unicode since version 1.1 (1993).

People also call it or search for it as: and, et.

On this site it is part of the punctuation and typography symbols (109 symbols), next to © ® ™ § .
