Streams of ╥ tears, wobbly mouths and sobbing shoulders. Use them for real heartbreak or, more often, for dramatic fake crying: the last slice of pizza is gone, the series ended, the bus left without you.

They are built from 40 distinct characters spread over 16 Unicode blocks, mainly Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms, Box Drawing, Spacing Modifier Letters. Most used characters in this category: ｡ halfwidth ideographic full stop (11), ﾟ halfwidth katakana semi-voiced sound mark (9), ω small omega (kaomoji mouth) (7), ﹏ wavy low line (7), Д cyrillic capital letter de (7).

Tips for using them

• Kaomoji are text, so they take the font of the app. A face can look a little wider or narrower in WhatsApp than here; that is normal.
• If a face shows an empty box on an old phone, it uses a rare character (from Spacing Modifier Letters, CJK Compatibility Forms, Greek and Coptic). Pick a face without it.
